LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
First of all, I just want to say welcome to the first issue of Les Bonnes Fees! The past couple of months have been quite the whirlwind as we work to find our feet in the fairy tale world.
Putting Fees together has been a lot of fun, but it's certainly not a one person show, so I want to introduce you to our team. First, there's Joe, our Contract Guru and Web Imp; Sheryl, our PR and Business Manager; and Rouha, our Art Director. Then there's me, General Editor, Fairy Tale Freak, and Official Gopher. We come from fairly diverse backgrounds and are split over three time zones, and we're hoping some of these differences will spill over into Fees, making us interesting, eccentric, and, of course, eminently readable.
Over the past few months I've had a lot of questions about Fees, but the most important one, the one that's kept me at night, is "why?" Well, there are a few answers, but the truest one is this: I love fairy tales. I've read them all my life, filling my bookshelves, my radiators, my tables, and several sections of my floors with fairy tale anthologies and works. The thing is, though, that all of those works are people who are out of my reach, dead authors, agented authors, folklorists and anthologists far removed my circle. And while their works are wonderful, it's always felt as if there's something missing—who can I tell I loved this book, that I related to this character? Authors and readers don't—can't—connect.
A brief Googling shows that interest in fairy tales is indeed widespread, with blogs and general articles cropping up all over the internet, a litany of fairy tale inspired books on Amazon, and fairy tale forums and sites like the sublime SurLaLune. None of these, though, allow author and reader to interact in any meaningful way; Fees is my way of helping to fill that gap. We want to encourage readers and authors to talk, commentators and readers to discuss—our weblog and livejournal community will each feature author posts and discussions. We want to publish stories, articles, media that's missed by the mainstream. We want to help other people see fairy tales not as children's stories, but rather as the collection of wonders and marvels, truth and allegory, darkness and light that they are.
Welcome to Les Bonnes Fees. I hope you'll stay a while.
